Mixing It Up

Fishing shacks in Blue Rocks, N.S.

   Hi Everyone,

Two photos from hurricane Lee that recently blew over Nova Scotia.

A very good day to stay home.

Autumn has arrived and the leaves are slowly changing. I'm always picking up leaves and such even when I say I won't.

Came upon this welcome scene in the middle of the woods.

                                                                       Burning Bush

A lethargic bee

With the temps dropping the bees are moving slowly. Great photo opportunity, but not good for the bees. I am not sure if these worker bees made it back to the hive.

The beautiful artwork today is by Jeanie who blogs at The Marmalade Gypsy. You can find Jeanie here. Jeanie sent me this delightful card as a thank you for being a winner of my recent giveaway.

Until Next Time...

Glicee Prints

November 29, 2016

Today, I added this Gilcee print to my shoppe.  "Pretty Boy" is  a Resplendent Quetzal. A magnificent bird who is at home in the forests of Central America.  I'd love to see one.

It's a  grey day here today so it's been a challenge to capture the colours, although this picture is very close to the original. He's a bright boy!

Yesterday, I finished an new version of a painting that I've painted before.  The image below will be on Christmas cards, which I am about to order.

Of course, I can't forget my real feathered friends.; I have been out and about and have seen a few birds, although most have left the country for warmer climes.  But, luckily,  sometimes they pop by for a visit and perch in the trees outside my window.

The Three Musketeers.

Thanks for stopping by.  Have a wonderful week...

Watercolour Card

 May 31, 2016

I've been doing a little blog spring cleaning. After three years and just a few changes here and there it was definitely time. A favicon would be nice too.  I've also been thinking of starting an art blog, but as you know they do take time. For me, time probably better spend painting since I can't seem to stick to one subject.

You may remember the Maestro from an earlier post.  Because the painting was not working for one reason or another, I ended up painting three versions.  I didn't want to throw out the birds because I put a lot of work into them. Thanks to a suggestion from my lovely friend, Soma I decided to make a card.  My rotary paper cutter is small, but I managed to cut the card stock and it looks straight. (I've seen so many beautiful cards on blogs that I visit. I could use a lesson.) Thankfully, I was lucky to find card stock in my craft supply suitcase and an envelope that fits.

Although this suitcase looks new, it reminds me of old travel cases.

I love the pictures on the inside.
I may make another card and paint the background, or perhaps I'll make a shadow box. Watercolour paper would work too. Perhaps I'll find a treasure to help me out inside the suitcase: a case full of surprises, almost magical it seems, because I toss a few things in now and then and rarely look inside.

I added a few original watercolour flower cards to my shoppe yesterday.  There's one left. I am hoping to add more prints to the shoppe this fall, so I better start painting.

Enjoy the week!

Watercolour Gift Tags and A Lotus Flower

My mother loves Easter and when we were children she usually bought us pastel dresses etc. to celebrate the season and to ring in spring. In particular, I remember a beautiful multi-coloured pastel dress, sweet white socks and black patent leather shoes, topped off with a wee white straw purse with (you guessed it) an ornate ducks head on top.  So since Easter is not far away, those memories my mother created for me triggered my need to create a little beauty. I opted for these simple watercolour tags. They are pretty and easy to make, although they do take time.
I was hoping to add ribbon but I can't find any 1/4 inch pastel ribbon.  So I may have to settle for pastel twine, although I have my heart set on soft-hued pink, blue, and yellow ribbon. ( I know it's only a gift tag, but, hey, there are standards!)

If you are interested, here's how I made them.  I cut the tags out of watercolour paper using a template. Then I splashed the front of two of the cards with water (two cards--all I could manage at one time) and randomly dabbed on the paint that I had watered down before hand. After letting the water dry a little while or longer, (drying time changes how the salt reacts) I sprinkled the cards with coarse and fine salt. Once they dried, I brushed off the salt and continued on to the other side.  I left a few cards plain on the reverse side, although I do like the texture that the salt creates.
Luckily, I found a forgotten bird punch in my hoard of craft supplies to top off the tag.

Recently off the drawing board and keeping with the pastel theme: a lotus flower. They are such lovely flowers. We have waterlilies in Canada which are beautiful as well. I'd love a pond full! To emerge pristine and  beautiful from muddy beginnings has made the lotus symbolic for many religions, including Christianity.

I hope to paint a few more flowery watercolour cards to pop in the mail for Easter.

And lastly, (well almost)  here's a link for my instagram account. If you follow, I will definitely follow you back.

Thanks for reading along...Have a wonderful week!
