"In the Air

 Hi Everyone,

Spring appears to be in the air one day and gone the next. Fierce March winds have been blowing everything about. But I don't mind the wind. I love to hear it blow and it helps the snow disappear.

In March, long ago, skipping along as children we always said over and over, "March winds, April showers, bring forth May flowers."  In this ever changing world, I am glad to report that that still holds true.

"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade."

Charles Dickens

I haven't seen a robin yet. Too early I suspect. I do open a window in the morning and listen for their songs. So far I've heard: Geese (love to hear  and see the geese flying over) and Crows and Starlings. Crows and Starlings are not the best singers, but a bird has to start somewhere.

Pastel on dark maroon Pastelmat paper. I thought I had ordered all one colour. Surprises are good though.

I've heard of the Sketchbook Project, and I was surprised to receive this in the mail. It's from Brooklyn Art Library in New York. Why am I surprised? Well, because I didn't order it. (Just to be sure, I checked my Visa.) I assume some lovely person had it sent to me. So whoever you are (I have my suspicions) I would like to thank you personally, so please let me know who you are. For now, I thank you so much!  And I appreciate your kindness.

Rules: Art must remain within the 5 x 7 inch parameters, no gesso, and you can opt to have it digitized.

The library also has a bookmobile and they drive across the country, now and then, with the collection. Mine's from Volume 18 and it must be sent in by August 31, 2021. I may fill it with flowers. Decisions, decisions.

Printing Cards

I haven't printed cards for awhile, so it took some time. My notes are geared towards someone who knows exactly what they are doing, or wants to begin in the middle of things.  And sometimes you just need to go back to square one.

I hope you all have a very Happy Easter!

Landscapes and Greeting Cards

 September 8, 2020

 Hi there,

Mostly a picture post today.  But I will say that the new Blogger interface makes it much easier to move pictures around. And I like the visible comment section that shows in the preview. A definite must!

A few red leaves. It's happening slowly.

I love ponds; they are always so peaceful. I sat on the bank and
watched the fish jump in this pond for awhile.

Print making on the go. I am making cards in both a gloss and matte finish.  Just now, I only have a few of the wildflower cards with a matte finish, but more matte cards are on the way.

After the storm.

This wonderous double rainbow arched the whole way across the sky. I feel very lucky to have seen such awe inspiring beauty.

June's Tune

June 30, 2020

Hi there,

I hope you all had a good month!

Here in Canada, June with its puffy, free floating clouds, bluest of skies, and blossoms running riot everywhere you look is the best of months. And one truly longed for which makes it even sweeter. Actually, for me, June is like a poem or a song from nature, and to heap accolades on it, it's the best painting of all.

Greens intensify.
Container plants take off.
Ivy trails.

                                                               Peonies bloom.

Bees forage and buzz out arias.

Weeds show off.

Roses bloom and bushes too.

Woodland Ferns grow large. And so much more, but I will move along for now.

           * * *

On the making front, this month I tried eco-printing. I don't have a heat press, and a press would really enhance the colours. But, overall, it worked quite well using a regular iron and pressing everything between two sheets of Teflon. Another time, I will experiment with lighter weight paper, and, of course, a wider variety of flowers and leaves. And who knows I may brave it and boil everything up in an old pot on the stove. Dahlias would make a lovely print. I don't have any, but I may be able to 'borrow' a few.

Bunting also piqued my interest, so I decided to make one, drawing whatever comes to mind with gel pens on black paper. Approximately 12 more to go, although I may make it smaller and string it across my desk.

I left comments for everyone who visited last time. Thanks for your company!

Hope

April 14, 2020

Hi there,

I haven't posed for sometime and since this is a diary of sorts, I will say something about what is happening in the world. It seems the world changed overnight. And here we are, a world full of people, in isolation, trying to cope with it all while striving to maintain a sense of normality. At this point, I'd like to say I do hope you and your families are all well and safe and sound.

I feel so sorry for those who are struggling, or stranded far from home, and for those who are sick and for the families who have lost their loved ones.

Like people everywhere, I hope and pray that a vaccine will soon be ready. I know that we all feel a tremendous amount of gratitude for our doctors and nurses, grocery store employees, truckers, and all essential service employees. Many essential service employees can't go home to their families until this is over. One is a friend of mine. They are brave, inspiring, and selfless.

I remembering reading somewhere that hope is a thing with wings and that hope floats ( the latter a title of a movie). I think that's true.

"Once you choose hope,
anything is possible."

Christopher Reeve

"Hope is the only thing stronger than fear."

Suzanne Collins

Sadly world emergency plans are woefully inadequate. But dwelling on that doesn't help. So I'd also like to focus on the inspiring folks who are putting hope to work by posting signs in cities and towns, offering to pick up groceries for anyone who may need help. People who give the gift of music and song and dance and praise from their balconies and door steps to uplift other people. For the people who maintain their distance in grocery stores and share with you a reassuring smile. And hats off to the man who paid for many senior citizens' groceries. And a hurray to the small business owners and other businesses who are working, or re-tooling to make respirators, masks, hand sanitizer, gowns etc. And, of course, praise goes to the researchers who are tirelessly working to find a vaccine. Good Samaritans to the core. And there are many, many more.

* * *

I began knitting this shawl back in November. There were several stops along the way.  I originally named it "The Trees of Shetland" because the designer said it represents Shetland's trees. Recently, I decided to re-name it 'Hope' because that's what I see at work in the world.  (Among other things, green represents renewal, new life, balance, and hope.)

Much larger than anything I've made before.

May hope light your way.

To the Sea

 Hi there,

It has been awhile. I hope you are all doing well!
I was off to visit with family. And those lucky people live in Nova Scotia. Have I mentioned that I    love and miss the sea? Probably only about a million times, I suppose.

A dory bobbing about the harbour in my home town.

A perfect day for sailing.

As you know,  I love old houses too. Notice the antique lantern above the door.
And look at the door! I better not get started on doors. 👀

It always pleases me to see an old house left unscathed by modern fancies.

Another beauty.

This one is for sale. I'm counting my pennies.

A hitching post perhaps?  When I went to school, I walked by it every  day.

An outside basement cellar door. Not many left now. Notice it is not locked. The house wasn't usually accessible through these cellars.

Ancient trees that have been there for probably much more than a century uprooted by hurricane Dorian. The clean up was still in progress. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

This beauty is in Lunenburg, N.S.

Nova Scotia's Ambassador The Bluenose II in Lunenburg harbour. The original Bluenose was built in 1921.
The name Bluenoser is nickname for Nova Scotians. When I was a child I was told that, long ago, (18th century) fishermen wore blue knitted mitts and they would sometimes, while fishing from their dories, swipe their misty noses with their blue mitts. Of course the dye ended up on their noses. Hence Bluenoser.

Black Rocks, N.S.

Rock weed, or sea weed. What a gorgeous colour!

My lovely niece, Marci.

I thought I might stay and sell seashells by the seashore, but, alas, it was not to be.
