Hi everyone,
Nearing the end of October, so it's time to think about Hallowe'en. For four years now I have painted a little something for the season. Twice on pumpkins just for fun.
Although the autumn colours are not as brilliant as other years, it is still gorgeous out there. Because of hot summer, the leaves have been turning slowly. At this point, usually, the wind and rain has whipped most of the leaves off the trees by now. Not so this year.

The paper above has been repurposed. I've been asked about repurposing paper, and although I have touched on it before, now's the time to elaborate.
The old pastel painting was brushed off (outside) then the paper was washed. Important to sandwich the paper between paper towels and lay it between heavy books until it dries. The washing does take some of the tooth away, and can leave a shadow of the your former work. (No problem.) If necessary, the tooth of the paper can easily be reinstated with a transparent Gesso, or Pastel ground, or you can use a fixative. I opted for workable fixative. (Important to to spray outside.) And the fixative does darken the painting somewhat.
As far as pastel ground or even transparent Gesso goes, it can be rather thick and tricky. One day I will experiment and this time add a bit more water in my search for the right consistency. If the pastel ground is too thick and textured, it will gobble up your expensive pastels.
Fern frond. Love the "pumpkin" colours.
Wishing you all a safe and Happy Hallowe'en!

Happy Wednesday!
Oh Dixie, I love all your Halloweenies! They're such fun. I feel woefully un-Halloween ready (nary a decoration and no cards were sent either.) I'd even had cards printed of my spooky owl to send but now it's the day before. Well, I'm set for next year. Love the fall colors, don't you? Happiest of Halloweens!
ReplyDeleteHi Dixie! Your art is fab! I'm about to rush out the door, but I will come back later when I have time to read all the tips on your "watercolour 101" page. Thanks for popping by my blog today!

I haven't yet tried to paint on pumpkins.
ReplyDeleteYour fall colors look lovely to me. Our colors have been brilliant this year ... we must live in different parts of the country. I love your pastel though, I have to admit, I don't think I would ever repurpose a piece of paper (too lazy, I guess). It sounds like a lot of work to me 😁 Your wolf(or coyote) howling at the moon on the pumpkin is very cool ... it is not easy to paint on a pumpkin, but I see you have mastered it :) It is past Halloween, so I will wish you a Happy Novemeber :)
