Days of Sunshine

Hi everyone,

Not many walks in the woods this winter. The Japanese call a walk in the woods forest bathing. Clever people.

The winter has been extremely cold and stormy season so far, but so happy to be out recently to gain new perspectives and inspiration. Wonderful to see blue skies.

Of late, enjoying the sunshine and longer, brighter days. Sunset 5:20 p.m. and daylight increasing by two or three minutes per day. The way I see it that means approximately fifteen minutes per week.  Hurray!

Computers have kept me away. Main computer still out of commission. Inside the computer tower the hardware has been cradled in spots that are, at this point, inaccessible. Done, no doubt, so that you have to buy a new computer, or send it in for repair.  An expensive endeavour for sure.
My son usually builds the towers, but not this tower. We took it to the “geek squad”—(yes that is what they call themselves) and they said no cant be done.

Not one to say uncle before all avenues have been exhausted, I think Jesse still has a plan.

Meanwhile, my iPad took a bath and required more than TLC.  I’ll spare you the details of that fiasco.
New rules.  No water, tea or any liquid within 10 yards of computers at the moment. So easy to think a spill won’t happen.

 Nearly Over it ...

Definitely time to locate the book Don't Sweat the Small Stuff.

Green Tea
Pleased to Join T Stands for Tuesday this week.

In the middle palette dried gouache. Many people use dry gouache, but from the tube              might be a better option for me.  I still have much to learn about gouache.                             The small gouache painting looks more like watercolour. It's difficult to mix a thick mix from dry gouache. Maybe it depends on the brand. Any thoughts?
There are divots in the paint because I forget to spray the palettes with water.

Speaking of spray, notice the buckled
canvas to the right. ( Buckled canvases are usually in the cheap bin at the store.) A quick fix: spray the back of the canvas with water, and once dry it will tighten like a drum--treated canvas on the left.    (Info I read somewhere.)

Although canvases have a layer of gesso, it’s good to add another layer or two of gesso so that the paint doesn't sink into the canvas. Some people gesso the back as well.

Pleased to be linking to Nicole's Friday Face Off

A very Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!

Be well and stay strong. Good will prevail.

I love the idea of Forest bathing, but this winter has not been a good winter for walking with the wind and very cold weather in my area. I miss it so much also. :) And I don't think your small piece looks a lot like watercolor as it feels heavier, like gouache tends too. I like dry gouache because it makes piece like a mix between the strong acrylic solidity and the wispiness of watercolor.Hope you have a great T day and Valentine's Day too.

Beautiful snow photos, although I wouldn't like to be out in it.
What a computer nightmare , and then the iPad that went swimming! Not good. My iPad took a nose dive and the screen is smashed in one corner, but it still works, so 'Phew!'
I love the drawing for Friday Face Off.
Happy T-Day,
Lisca

Shinrin-yoku is such a beautiful concept.
Your resilience with the computer and iPad saga made me smile--wise new rules!
Wishing you sunshine, inspiration, and a very Happy Valentine’s Day.

That's a great idea about the canvas. I like the idea of forest bathing -- but not in the snow! I'm sort of a warm-weather "bath" kind of person! Well done on the painting. I don't know much about gouache, though I worked on that before watercolor but it has been a long while. I'm so sorry to hear about your computer issues. I've never tried dry gouache. I should fill one of my small palettes with a few of the main colors and give it a go.

A walk in the woods sounds nice. I no longer trust it as have to watch falls now at my age, but your woods photo looks like a great place. Also, thanks for the great tip on the loose canvas. Beautiful snow photos. Have a nice weekend.

I really enjoyed your winter walk in the woods, and your reflections on gouache and the practical canvas tip. Thank you!

Those are gorgeous snowy forest scenes you captured, even if it's probably too cold for me. I like the soft lines and shadows of your portrait. Happy FFO!

Sorry that technical problems have kept you away. Fingers and toes crossed or maybe if I wiggle my nose or somehow life will include your puters working. Forest bathing I have done each year with rain, snow, or blue skies.

Forest bathing... I like that! sorry to hear about your computer and iPad. Makes me angry Microsoft and Apple make people buy new hardware on a regular basis.

Winter looks lovely in your corner of the world, but maybe not the best for forest bathing. .. Oh and Dixie, I had to stop in the middle of reading this post and remove the glass of water that was dangerously close to my computer! Thanks for the reminder/warning but I'm sorry that you had cause to give it. You are so talented in other creative paths though and I thank you for sharing those as well. Making my little posts is the only creative thing I do, so I'd really be lost without mine.... I do hope you get yours fixed soonest though so you can continue to share your talents. And I too am grateful to have a son who knows something about these electronics we can no longer live without.

I'm so sorry about the computer troubles. I'm with you, know drinks by the PC. I'm happy to see you back with FFO. Your art is lovely. I like working with gouache too. Since it is an opaque water paint it will have the effect of watercolor. However, I mix very little water with mine to make it thicker. Your portrait is gorgeous. She has such emotion in her eyes. You really accomplished that perfectly. Thank you for sharing with FFO and have a very nice weekend.

Your portrait is absolutely lovely. It looks like my friend whom I lost last year. Wonderful artwork. I love the little watercolour containers! Super cute! They must be perfect for on the go. Have a lovely weekend and a wonderful Valentine's Day tomorrow. :)

...Dixie, may the forest be with you. Enjoy a lovely weekend, be well.

Water and digital hardware do not mix.
The frustrating thing about computers is that they just don't run down. When they stop, they stop, and that is it.
Looks like you have outlets for creative expression.

I am sure Jessie will find a great solution for you. In the meantime - well done with the canvas and the portrait is lovely. I have a whole palette for greens only! Beautiful green samples and the little painting looks so wonderful.

Oh dear, Dixie, how frustrating the 'geeks' are unable to solve your techno problems. I think 'forest bathing' and playing with your paints might just well be the perfect antidote to your computer troubles.

Dear Dixie, your "winter forest bathing" pictures look so beautiful. We had snow here again too—a lot, but only for two days. At least it was enough for us to go sledding with our grandson. Then the snow melted and rained away very quickly.
Your computer and iPad stories sound like quite a challenge—I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be alright soon! I really like your little landscape painting—whether it's gouache or watercolor—it looks like a tranquil (Japanese?) landscape...- bautiful! The portrait you're showing is also very appealing.
All the best from Austria,
Traude
